Join us for the FIRST Global Yoga Therapy Day

August 14, 2019

Earlier this summer, at the Symposium on Yoga Therapy and Research (SYTAR), our professional organization, the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT) announced the first Global Yoga Therapy Day to be August 14, 2019. IAYT encouraged all yoga therapists to create an offering in their community to promote and invite students to the practice. Yoga Therapists across the globe will come up with creative ways to showcase what they do to educate, promote and provide yoga therapy. The motto is accessibility: “If you can breathe, you can practice Yoga.”

On Wednesday, August 14, I will offer 2 free yoga therapy classes in the Youth Building of Christ United Methodist church (much thanks to CUMC). We will enjoy a group practice that allows us to experience a few yoga poses and preparations, learn a new pranayama, enjoy a new mudra as well as a deep restorative pose. We will use chairs and bolsters in both classes. And, we will enjoy some Ayurveda inspired refreshments. Whether you are a new or seasoned student, this will be a great way to kick-start our 2019-2020 year in LifeFit yoga practice. All participants are asked to bring nonperishable goods to contribute to the Out of the Garden backpack program that CUMC supports weekly. Sign up HERE for the 10:00- 11:00 am Beginners/Intermediate level class and HERE for the 11:30 am -12:30 pm Chair yoga class. Hope to see you on August 14!

Whether or not you are able to attend, I wanted to share on a great new (free) tool with you. Ann Marie Johnston, a yoga marketing guru, created an app called Yoga for Better Health, which launched recently in Apple and Google Play. The app shares 275+ safe(r) yogic practices (including breath work, meditation and philosophy). Yoga for Better Health also shares videos and educational content about yoga therapy, together with a directory of qualified yoga therapists around the world (with the ability to search by area of expertise, location and online session availability). Download and enjoy it today

It is often difficult to be disciplined in your practice but it is also your refuge. Polish your practice, refine what you practice constantly, you will evolve and reflect your inner guru to others.

Getting Ready for more LifeFit Yoga Retreats

This summer we had our first LifeFit yoga retreat at Oakhaven Farm Pelham, NC! This was a great learning experience for all and proved to be a great success, enjoyed by everyone who participated. As the retreat unfolded everything fell into place and transitions revealed a great set of opportunities to benefit many of our LifeFit students as we begin to plan the next retreats in Summer 2020. I have often felt that “the way” to move forward with business needs was to look within our LifeFit community of students. This is how Oakhaven was chosen (owner is Patience Ergish), and what a delightful hidden gem! This 100 year old farm of 1500 acres, nearby to Greensboro, allowed some students to stay onsite and others to commute the 35 minute drive. The farm is beautifully manicured and the newly renovated barn holds 300! It is marketed as a wedding venue, so we were not “roughing it.” Instead, we felt pampered both inside the Manor House (sleeps 12), barn and around the gorgeous estate, to include Lake Louise. We enjoyed fresh food, had Ayurvedic cooking lessons (thanks to Puja Verma), and the undertone of the retreat had the lessons of “Relationships.” Day 1:  I am a student of my breath. Day 2: I am a student of my body. Day 3: I appreciate the relationships in my life. We connected and reflected on relationships in our asana practice, our meditations, our continued study of Ayurveda and our great meals around a beautiful dining table - we had three dining rooms to choose from but of course we all sat together. A great connection in the week before the retreat gave way to a local acupuncturist to come out and give a short lecture and a free treatment to all participants. You can find Jason Trakas at Stillpoint Acupuncture – tell him you are a LifeFit student – relationships count! Our very own Teresa Lowell attended and offered massage therapy through her new business Artists in Motion. If you are looking for a massage therapist, you will be so pleased to connect to Teresa! We will return to Oakhaven with a one-day retreat in July 2020 (stay tuned for the date) to allow a mini version of this great experience for a myriad of reasons:

1.  For students going on the retreat to Spain (August 15 – 22, 2020), it will be a way to “get ready” for that deepening practice experience. The theme of that retreat will be “Spinal Rejuvenation” as we will have access to 24 yoga wall stations.  The prerequisites for attending will be listed in the coming month on the LifeFit website, as we refine the marketing for this next LifeFit endeavor. There are 20 spaces available to us in a beautiful yoga retreat center in Malaga, on the coast of Spain – hope to see you there!

2. For students who are not going on the retreat it will be a way to still participate in how we continue to grow in our practice and to get to experience some of the spinal rejuvenation practice … and the sequence handouts that will define the work we will be doing.

3.  Having a day retreat, commuting to Oakhaven will give many of our students a mini-experience of this inspiring place, as we will aim to do a 3 day retreat at this location every other year (and an international retreat alternating).

4.  We will have some of our usual summer workshops during this day-long retreat so we will not have as many workshops peppered sporadically throughout the summer.

5.  Along the coming months, the “specialty” Sunday afternoon yoga classes will provide more opportunity, focusing on gradual steps in spinal rejuvenation. Look for these classes to supplement your regular weekly class experience, whether or not you plan to attend the 2020 summer retreats.

Hope to see you along one of these yoga enrichment experiences!

Let’s stay connected!

The excitement is building for the ways that we journey deeper into our yoga practice, for our own self-discovery, and as a means to appreciate our connectivity, that we are one with the One, and therefore with each other.  I am so grateful to be connected to you all, and using this month to plan for our year in yoga practice together. For our “regular” students: if you have not already responded to claiming your spot in class for this coming year, please do so asap, so we can know where there is space for new students. For new, interested students: please reach out so we can find a great starting place for you in our LifeFit practice circle!  Follow LifeFit and Essential Yoga Practice on Social Media: Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Please “like,” “comment” and “share” to increase our visibility on those platforms and to see/learn as more yoga education is provided there as well.

During the month of July, at the full moon is Guru Purnima. I wrote on this for one of our social media platforms and wanted to share it here:  “It is a time we honor our teachers, and humbly recognize that we have so many who generously share their deep knowledge, who lead us by example, who guide and light our journey, and whose shoulders we stand on. My first teacher said, “Pay attention, your students will be your teachers too.” My second teacher always honored the teachers of his/our lineage, paying deep respect with words and actions, “living yoga” by example.  My third teacher truly lifts her students up, not just with incredible shared knowledge, but by pointing us in the direction of our own inner guru, emphasizing the spark of Divinity in each of us, that we are all teachers, we all have purpose, something to share, a gift from the Source of all creation. Lillah Schwartz, Aadil Palkivala and Indu Arora, thank you for sharing your deep wisdom and guiding us to ours. Thank you for showing us that we have teachers all around us and that we are all teachers, worthy of Divine Grace and responsible to be present, for ourselves and for the collective consciousness and,… to carry the torch. Jai Jai (Joy, Joy)!”

Looking forward to seeing you in our LifeFit Yoga practice circle, September 2019- 2020!

Om shanti,
Mona Flynn
