TRE: Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercise

What is TRE?

TRE is an effective technique that uses specific exercises to release anxiety, stress and stored trauma from the body, tensions that accumulate from everyday circumstances of life, from difficult situations, immediate or prolonged stressful situations, or traumatic life experiences. A tremor (healing vibration) experience is directed first to the psoas and then transitions to other parts of the body.  This is unique for each person, depending on how one’s body holds memory of stress. There is a great effect of release to the body at the level of fascia and other structural release.  TRE group practice is a great place to start as well as to refine your understanding of this mind-body tool for self-care in how to undo the way stress (physical and emotional) manifests in the body.  TRE is also offered as private and semi-private sessions.  

What to Know

Developed by Dr. David Bercelli, TRE is a wonderful mind-body modality designed to release the gripping patterns that come from both how the body holds memory of trauma and wears everyday stress/anxiety. All students will need:

  1. A wall to do a “chair sit” and

  2. Yoga mat and blanket(s) to use for floor work.

About this class

TRE is a simple technique that uses exercises to release stress or tension from the body that accumulates from everyday circumstances of life, from difficult situations, immediate or prolonged stressful situations, or traumatic life experiences (i.e., natural disasters, social or domestic violence).TRE is a set of seven exercises that help to release deep tension from the body by evoking a self-controlled muscular shaking process called neurogenic muscle tremors. The uniqueness of this technique is that this shaking originates deep in the core of the body, in the psoas muscles. These gentle tremors reverberate outwards along the spine releasing tension from the sacrum to the cranium.

The exercises are a simple form of stretching and are used to gently trigger these voluntary muscle tremors. Once the technique is learned and mastered after several sessions, the warm-up exercises can be accelerated or replaced with your normal exercise activity like walking or yoga, and the technique then becomes a quick and effective method for consistent relaxation. Eventually, these tremors will evoke themselves naturally in a rest position to reduce any stress or tension that was accumulated over the course of the day. TRE is being used by thousands of people around the world as an effective tool for releasing chronic traumatic stress, physical tension, and emotional trauma. It is also quickly becoming a popular way to release everyday stress, tension, and anxiety that evolves comes from the daily pressures of life.
